Planning for my new game has started.
I have come up with some ideas for the game. The brief said that the game should be an arcade game that will be played in a special arcade cabinet. The game has limited controls. There are no mouse inputs, only WASD, IOP JKL, Arrows, and 789 456. Yes, these are weird and uncomfortable input buttons to use.
Well, so what is the first thing that comes in mind when you talk about arcade games? A lot of people would say Mario or Pacman. The most common usage of this "arcade" word is to describe a game that is far from being realistic and complex, to deliver more robust and fluid gameplay, just like the original arcade game were like. As an example, if you want realism, play Forza Motorsport, if you want arcade, play Mario Kart. Scoring system, short and fun levels, retro, pixel or low poly styling are some of characters of arcade games.
The idea I came up with is a tower jumping game. It's simple, fun, and can be challenging. I thought of having the sci-fi mecha theming. The name of the game will be Tower Dungeon. I think this name suits it as many old arcade games were named very simply with names that said literally what the game is. In my game, my main character – square, is a being trapped in a tower dungeon. The dungeon has many platforms that the square has to jump on to reach the top. The lava is rising under the character after each jump and falling in it makes the player lose the game
Story I came up with:
The square has no name. It is some form of entity that spawned inside a dungeon and right away knew what to do like an AI that have been given task. The square is like a energy source. It has some power inside itself. The dungeon is like a big machinery. The spikes, saws and lava are security systems placed by the creator of dungeon to prevent anybody from reaching the top.
The top of dungeon contains the control system. Control system is controlling the whole machinery the dungeon is in. The square have been teleported into dungeon in order to get into control room and disable the machine. The machine in quote, is a military object of future civilisation that was sent to destroy a country.
The plot of the story is that this machine was sent by “good” people to destroy the aggressive country and protect the rest of the world. The square is coming from an aggressive country meaning that it is on the bad side and destroying the machine is bad for the world.
